Organisation: Kino Šiška and NDA Slovenija In 2024, the members of NDA Slovenia and co-curators of Cofestival identified (once again) a burning issue – the lack of spaces and infrastructure for contemporary dance. Work is carried out in unheated or expensive studio spaces, with no promise that this will change, and no guarantee that professional dancers will be able to work in professional conditions.

With the proposal OPEN STUDIO, we wanted to draw attention to this problem while also offering colleagues an actual physical space for work in the upper lobby of Kino Šiška, so that during Cofestival they could use it however they needed to: for rehearsals, work-in-progress showings, presentations, conversations… Everyone responded very quickly, and the studio, based on an online sign-up calendar, filled up fast.

Throughout its 7 days of operation, OPEN STUDIO functioned both as a rehearsal space and as a ready-made dance installation, since anyone passing by inevitably stopped to watch the dancers at work. Something happened that we could not have predicted: colleagues watched one another, talked, and a feeling emerged that we are one community – and that physical infrastructure enables and deepens this feeling.
