CoFestival is one of the central Slovenian and regional dance festivals, created as a co-production between the public institution Centre for Urban Culture Kino Šiška and the non-governmental organization Nomad Dance Academy Slovenia. We have been creating it since 2012. The current curatorial team consists of Dragana Alfirević, Mitja Bravhar, and Rok Vevar; in the past, Jasmina Založnik, Dejan Srhoj, Irena Tomažin Zagoričnik, Goran Bogdanovski, and others also collaborated on the festival.

We curate CoFestival discursively and thematically. We understand it as a space of expanded choreographic thinking, where we emphasize:
(1) understanding choreography as an expanded practice and affirming dance work in its diverse forms,(2) the selection of current contemporary dance production across different aesthetics and media,(3) the placement of historically important choreographic practices,(4) highlighting singular dance bodies beyond various norms,
(5) geo-cultural balance.We understand the festival as (6) a curatorial and artistic process in which, together with our audiences, we develop artistic interests and competencies; therefore, for us (7) the artistic program is just as important as the discursive program, which provides us with the language, concepts, and approaches for understanding and optimally experiencing contemporary dance art.

The festival implements the strategic directions of NDA: emphasis on the expanded concept of dance work, procedurality, the public time of art, eco-choreography, traceability of curatorial work, and the development of community and production structures. In line with NDA’s goals and vision, with CoFestival we strive to: create conditions for diverse, experimental, critical, and in-depth dance work in local, regional, and international contexts; develop the discursive language of contemporary dance; and strengthen artistic communities.

CoFestival is a tool through which NDA Slovenia realizes its vision of dance public time, discursive learning, and sustainable art, while also co-creating an internationally recognizable yet locally rooted contemporary dance community.

The festival does not have an open call for artists; instead, the curators invite artists to participate in the CoFestival program.
