More information
The contemporary dance scene in Serbia has been growing since 1995, with or without local support, yet continuously evolving. Its various actors – organizations, artists, cultural producers, theorists, dance activists – have succeeded in creating conditions for informal education, the production of new works, the visits and work of international artists in Serbia, visits from international experts who spread the word about Serbian dance artists, and the arrival of new generations who continue to build and share knowledge and experience.

Despite all this work, no cultural policy has emerged that supports or encourages this development or envisions a future in which this specific knowledge might be utilized. Serbia is one of the few European countries without a dance policy or a dance house, together with its neighbors, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Nomad Dance Advocates conference in Belgrade 2017 was conceived as a space for meetings and dialogue between decision-makers, politicians, artists, cultural workers, and dance activists from Serbia, the Balkans, Europe, and the USA, where key issues were addressed and, in the spirit of dialogue, passed on to decision-makers in the form of expert recommendations.
